![]() ![]() • Microsoft Excel • Google Sheets • OpenOffice DIY vs. Calculator Templates We describe how to build your own spreadsheet from scratch on this page, and you can use those instructions with slight modifications on other software programs. But there’s no need to do it all yourself — unless you really want to. Templates allow you to plug in a few details about your loan and be done with it, and those pre-built templates are easy to use. To use a loan template in Excel, open the template on your computer ( if necessary): • Click File, and select New on the left-hand menu • You'll see a list of available templates • Look through the templates (under Sample Templates) or search Office.com • Double-click the 'Loan Amortization' template An alternative method to get the Loan Amortization template is: • Right-click on the tab of sheets at the bottom ('Sheet1, Sheet2, etc.' ) • Select Insert. • Choose Spreadsheet Solutions from the pop-up menu. • Number of payments per year: How frequently do you pay? For monthly payments, enter 12.
